I find that students are often overwhelmedwhen they have to sit down and write an IELTS essay; I believe we all feel thatway at first when we have to sit down and write any essay, so I'd want to break down IELTS essay writing into basic phases. First and foremost, we must consider the format or structure of an IELTS essay.

It's broken down into three sections:

  • The Introduction
  • Body Paragraphs (2)
  • The Conclusion

You must know what points you will includein each of these sections when planning your essay.

In this piece, I'd want to take a closerlook at your IELTS essay's introduction.

The Introduction: First and foremost, consider the influence we wish to have on the IELTS examiner. We want them toread the introduction and then do the following:

  • be aware of the topic
  • be aware of our feelingstowards it
  • be enthralled by the prospectof reading the rest of our ideas

The Introduction should contain thefollowing:

1. Paraphrase: By definition, paraphrasing means using different words to restate the topic of theessay. A simple example: If I make asimple sentence, ‘Most men drive cars to work’, I can also paraphrase this by saying ‘The automobile is the main means of transportation for the majority of the working male population’. So changingthe flow of words, changing the structure of a sentence or using synonyms, any or all of these 3 things will allow you to paraphrase easily.

2. Thesis or Opinion Statement(only if it is an Opinion essay): Here, you state your opinion, i.e., whichside you are on. So, for example, ifit’s an Agree/Disagree essay and you have decided that you agree completely,

  • your opinion statement can be as straightforward as ‘This essay completely
  • agrees with this viewpoint’. Essentially, you are letting the reader know right
  • upfront in the introduction that you are taking a particular side and you are
  • going to structure your essay from this side’s perspective.

3. Outline Sentence: The purposeof an outline sentence is to let the reader know as to what your essay willcontain; in other words, what you are going to write about in the body paragraphs. So, again if we take thesame Agree/Disagree essay example where you have agreed completely, your outline sentence should very clearly and specifically mention the 2 reasons for your agreement, in brief. It should not be ageneric outline sentence saying ‘This essay will discuss the reasons for my agreement’. This generic outlinesentence does not provide any clarity to the reader as to what your reasons are for agreement and will not get you any marks for coherence. UK Student Visa Consultants

Here is an example to help you betterunderstand how to write an introduction incorporating the 3 parts(Paraphrasing, Opinion Statement and Outline Sentence) talked about above.

Topic:

Some people think that the government iswasting money on the arts and that this money could be better spent elsewhere.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Introduction:

Paraphrasing: Increased expenditure on the arts by the government is thought bysome people to be a waste and they are of the opinion that this money can bebetter used in other areas.

Opinion Statement: I completely disagree with thisviewpoint.

Outline Sentence: This essay will discuss how preservingarts leads us to better understand and appreciate history and culture and howincreased spending on arts leads to increased tourism for the country.

By combining the above 3 parts, this is howthe introduction will look like:

Increased expenditure on the arts by thegovernment is thought by some people to be a waste and they are of the opinionthat this money can be better used in other areas. I completely disagree with thisviewpoint. This essay will discuss howpreserving arts leads us to better understand and appreciate history andculture and how increased spending on arts leads to increased tourism for the country.
